ICANN, the organization that manages the global internet network, has launched a new webpage to raise awareness about the functioning and use of domains as part of its campaign for the upcoming round of launches. The goal is to highlight success stories through the history of the participating registrations, so they can serve as examples and demonstrations of how the system works. Among the fifteen domains used as examples is PuntoGal: https://newgtldprogram.icann.org/en/resources/usecases.
Also included in this first group of entities sharing their experiences is .bzh, representing Brittany, which is also part of the Geotlds — geographic, cultural, and linguistic domains. Other examples mentioned are brand-related domains like .microsoft, professional associations such as .pharmacy, and commercial domains like .xyz.
Each registration document includes a brief introduction, key data such as the URL and contact email, as well as a short questionnaire about the domain acquisition and usage process.
“PuntoGal is Galicia’s own domain, but it is also an open domain to the world, integrated into the ICANN ecosystem and the associations of registries and registrars,” says Darío Janeiro, General Director of .gal. “We are always ready to share our experience and highlight the work we’ve done over the years,” he concludes.
The Galician domain celebrates its first ten years of operational life in 2024, although the entity supporting it began operations in 2006. In recent months, PuntoGal has celebrated this anniversary with various events and initiatives, which culminated in a party at Culturgal in Pontevedra. In addition, .gal launched a special promotion, still available, to obtain the domain at a special price, along with a second promotion offering additional benefits for non-profit organizations. The domain currently has more than 7,200 registrations.
