This time we talk with an entity of maritime culture of Cambados founded in 1998 by the initiative of a group of people related to sport and maritime culture.
Question: Where did the idea of the Clube Maríño Salnés initiative come from? What is its origin?
Answer: The CMS was formally established in 1998 on the initiative of a group of people from Cambados related to maritime sports and culture. The initial aim was to offer Cambados society a new cultural and sporting modality that had not existed until then in the town.
In 1999 the entity was formally presented by organizing the exhibition “Boats and Dornas”, which was held in the plenary hall of the town hall of Cambados from April 2 to 12. The exhibition brought together artistic creations associated with the sea and maritime culture: painting, photography, naval models and even a recital of sea poetry with authors from groups such as the Literary Battalion of Fisterra or Siete Naos. The collaboration with other artistic and cultural manifestations will be one of the signs of identity of the association since its constitution.
That same year we organized the I Traditional Sailing School to train sailors. From that moment on, CMS established itself as a reference in the conservation of traditional boats and the organization of events for the dissemination of maritime culture.
During all these years, the CMS did not stop organizing exhibitions, dornas regattas, sailing courses, maritime culture workshops or meetings of traditional boats. And in 2005, it achieved the support of the Galician Federation for Maritime and River Culture to host the VII Meeting of Traditional Boats of Galicia, Cambados 2005, in the town of Cambados.
Q: What is the intention of your initiative and where do you want to go?
A: The intention of the CMS is determined by its founding objectives as stated in the statutes of the entity:
Dissemination of maritime culture.
Promotion and protection of the tangible and intangible maritime heritage.
Conservation and maintenance of the different types of traditional Galician boats.
Encourage leisure activities around the maritime culture, especially sailing in traditional boats.
Promote, organize and participate in sports and cultural activities that have maritime culture as a reference: regattas, meetings, reunions, marinas, etc.
The CMS, after these 25 years of existence, is already a consolidated entity both in the town and in Galicia as a whole in terms of culture and maritime heritage. However, our future is oriented to the achievement of the following objectives:
Permanence of the TRADITIONAL SAILING SCHOOL OF CAMBADOS.
Achievement of the MARINA TRADITIONAL PORTO DE CAMBADOS: facilities at sea (mooring pontoon for the traditional fleet) and on land (ship-workshop).
Continuity in the organization of the Albariño Dornas Regatta as well as the EETT Meeting – Tito Silva Memorial.
Construction of a replica of the GAMELA DE CAMBADOS type.
To increase the social mass of the entity and the social penetration.
Q: Who is behind the club?
A: Current number of members: 52
Honorary member: Lino Silva (painter)
The configuration of CMS is defined by a diversity of people in terms of age, origin, gender and political thought. In this sense, CMS is governed by the principles of equality, participation, tolerance, and respect.
Q: Why do you use and what does the .gal domain mean to you?
A: For CMS, both tangible and intangible heritage are important. In this sense, we seek the conservation of traditional boats as representative elements of the Galician maritime cultural heritage, but also the conservation and dissemination of intangible heritage associated with traditional boats and maritime culture in general.
Thus, the knowledge and know-how of shipwrights, the architectural configuration of the seafaring neighborhoods or the local toponymy associated with natural or geographical elements of the coast and the coastline, are the main object of our entity. For us, the Galician language is the channel of communication as we often cannot understand the Galician maritime culture without the language associated with it. The abundant nomenclature of traditional boats or seafaring expressions, are part of the vocabulary of the sea that we consider an inseparable part of our activity as an entity for the preservation of Galician maritime culture and heritage.
According to these principles, we support the communication channels that use Galician as a reference language as well as those spaces that have Galician culture as a reference for their actions.
