Vigo, April 11, 2024 – The event took place today, Thursday, April 11, 2024, at the Meeting Room of the School of Telecommunications Engineering of the University of Vigo at 11 am. It was held in a hybrid format with attendees in person and via streaming, within the global program of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to expand the facilities of access to the network to the entire population, regardless of language or writing system. UA Day is celebrated with more than 50 events around the world.

The event was attended by Rebeca Pilar Díaz Redondo, director of the School of Telecommunications Engineering of UVigo; Edita de Lorenzo, professor of the School of Telecommunications Engineering of UVigo; and Javier Fernández Fraga, from the Galician School of Telecommunications Engineers, and Andrea Becalli, from ICANN, the organization that promotes UA Day worldwide.

Edita de Lorenzo, on her side, reflected on the personal and identitary component of the email adresses and domain names, and about the evolution of which we are witnessing form a very tecnological net and another more human, in contact with the cultural and social componente of the civilizations..

Finally, Javier Fernández Fraga, form the AETG, made a more technical view abut the implications on the writing code changes, which rules, routes and manages the messages of the electronic mail.

Universal Acceptance is a concept that refers to the ability of computer systems, applications and online platforms to recognize and appropriately handle any type of information or content, regardless of its origin, format or language. In practical terms, it implies that technologies should be designed and implemented in such a way that they can seamlessly handle and interpret characters, symbols and data structures from different cultures and languages. UA is fundamental to ensuring digital accessibility and equity, ensuring that all people, regardless of their background or language, can participate fully in the digital world.

In different presentations, the participants provided data that reinforced the idea that the network must be open to all languages, all alphabets and writing systems, that this equity must not only reach the contents of the different pages and platforms, but must also extend to access to the network and email addresses, including domain names. During two hours, examples and use cases of the application of these policies and how they affect the facilities of use of the network as a public service, means of information and interaction all over the world were presented.
