Network security and the impact of DNS abuses on human rights among the key topics of the meeting
Istanbul, November 11, 2024 | From Saturday, November 9, to Thursday, November 14, ICANN is holding its 81st Annual General Meeting in Istanbul, Turkey, focusing on the future of global Internet governance. The host entity of the event is Turkey’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA).
The event will bring together the global community to discuss important issues shaping the future of the Internet, such as network security and the impact of DNS abuses on human rights, among others. The meeting will include both in-person and virtual participants and feature workshops, public forums, and policy debates.
Sally Costerton, Interim President and CEO of ICANN, emphasized the significance of the event due to the imminent launch of the next round of the New Generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) Program. This proposal is part of ICANN’s initiatives to promote innovation and diversity.
PuntoGal is attending as a member of the international ICANN community and representing the Galician Internet domain. The organization will participate in various sessions and meet with registrars and other domain representatives with whom it maintains collaborative relationships. Members of PuntoGal’s working team and board of directors are attending.
The ICANN81 meeting also serves as an opportunity to explore ICANN’s multi-stakeholder model in preparation for the review of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS+20), scheduled for 2025. This model ensures the participation of governments, the private sector, civil society, and the technical community in shaping the future of the Internet.
