PuntoGal domain opened this 4th November the open registration phase for domains of 1 and 2 characters, which until now were impossible to register. This is, the combination of one or two letters or numbers that conform the especial domains, as for instance “4.gal” and “le.gal”, so the assignment process and the price are different from those of standard domains. This initial phase was opened for 90 days, until 14th October.
1 and 2 character domains fall into the category of premium domains, as they are unique, easily recognisable, short and therefore easy to remember names. The assignment of these domains does not follow the usual process of free registration, but a preliminary phase is open in which all entities, companies or institutions interested in acquiring them will have to submit an application. Once the deadline is over, PuntoGal will review the information received and assign the domains taking into account the fulfilment of the previous requirements. The requests will be collected through a form within the domain panel of the registrars collaborating in this action.
There were two categories in this phase. The first one is for natural or legal persons with specific vocation to promote Galician language and culture, including public administrations with competence in the Galician territory. Applications will be to register their names, variations or abbreviations, or their online services. The second category is reserved for the registration of trademarks and geographical indications recognised by Galician, Spanish or European Union regulations, with priority to Galician trademarks.
In any of the cases, PuntoGal will analyse all the applications received and will especially value that the domains will be destined to well-defined projects, with priority presence of Galician language in its contents.
PuntoGal will launchs this second phase, of free type, where the remaining domains will be available for those who wants to acquire them. In both phases, .GAL will monitor the use and dedication of the domains to ensure that they comply with the general registration regulations.
