PuntoGal and ICANN organize a universal acceptance awareness day in Vigo

Vigo, March 18, 2024-PuntoGal will hold on April 11 at 11:00 am an information and awareness day on UA (Universal Acceptance or Universal Acceptance), within the global program of ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to extend the facilities of access to the network to the entire population, without distinction of language or writing system. UADay is celebrated with more than 50 events around the world. The full list can be found here: universalacceptance.day

Universal Acceptance is a concept that refers to the ability of computer systems, applications and online platforms to recognize and appropriately handle any type of information or content, regardless of its origin, format or language. In practical terms, it implies that technologies should be designed and implemented in such a way that they can seamlessly handle and interpret characters, symbols and data structures from different cultures and languages. UA is fundamental to ensuring digital accessibility and equity, ensuring that all people, regardless of their origin or language, can participate fully in the digital world.

The event will be attended by Rebeca Pilar Díaz Redondo, director of the School of Telecommunications Engineering at UVigo; Camilo Regueiro, vice-president of PuntoGal; Edita de Lorenzo, professor at the School of Telecommunications Engineering at UVigo; and Javier Fernández Fraga, from the Galician Association of Telecommunications Engineers. The conference will also include the intervention of Andrea Becalli, from ICANN, the organization that promotes UADay worldwide.

The conference will take place on Thursday, April 11 in the Meeting Room of the School of Telecommunication Engineering of the University of Vigo (Rúa Maxwell, 16, 36310 Vigo), at 11 am. It will have a hybrid format, so it will also be possible to attend remotely. In any case, it will be necessary to register at the following link: i.gal/ua24.

On Universal Acceptance, Javier Fernández Fraga, from COET, states that “the Internet offers a unique opportunity to bring people from different parts of the world together and share ideas and experiences, but to make it constructive and enriching, it is essential to promote an interoperability of systems that fosters an inclusive online environment. Through universal acceptance, we create a community where all voices are valued equally. It’s up to us, as engineers, to facilitate this.

For her part, Edita de Lorenzo comments that “telecommunications make sense and for the interaction between people, so it is essential to promote respect for the diversity of opinions, cultures and identities. In the case of the School of Telecommunications Engineering, we transmit these values on a daily basis, and universal acceptance is a way to apply them at work. Moreover, this will be a competitive advantage for the products and solutions developed by engineering graduates in an increasingly globalized world.”

PuntoGal’s CEO, Dario Janeiro, points out that the celebration of this event “is another step in the domain’s commitment to a network open to all cultures and languages and to the positioning of the domain as a reference actor in the ICT field in Galicia.” Together with other initiatives, such as the collaborations with the GlobalCyberAlliance, the WomenforCyber or the Galician cybersecurity node ciber.gal, the Galician domain “plays a relevant role as part of the network infrastructure, without forgetting the support to projects within the scope of its corporate program”, he concludes.

About UA, ICANN says that it “ensures that all people have the ability to navigate and communicate on the Internet using the domain name and email address that best suits their interests, business, culture, language and spelling. Being UA ready will help connect the next millions of people to the web. Many of them currently encounter language barriers on the Internet.” Similarly, “when organizations and companies are UA-ready, they are setting themselves up for future success and potential business growth by supporting their customers’ chosen identities. UA-ready websites, applications and services drive the best user experiences and enable greater competition, innovation and consumer choice.”

About the School of Telecommunications Engineering

Telecommunications Engineering studies in Galicia began in 1985 with the creation of the School of Telecommunications Engineering (ETSE) on the campus of Vigo. Currently, two degrees are offered for the profession of Telecommunications Engineering (one taught in Galician/Spanish and the other in English) with four specializations: telematics, sound and image, telecommunication systems and electronics, and also the Master of Telecommunications Engineering for the practice of the profession of Telecommunications Engineer. In addition, interuniversity masters in Cybersecurity (MUniCS), in Industrial Mathematics (M2I), in Computer Vision and in Quantum Information Science and Technologies (MQIST) are also offered.
