A Coruña, 10 September 2024– PuntoGal has just signed an agreement with the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF), a non-profit organization based in the United Kingdom whose main aim is identify and remove illegal material related to child sexual abuse from the Internet. This collaboration will allow PuntoGal to detect fraudulent or misleading domains that host harmful content of children.
In recent years, the IWF experienced significant growth in its capacity to detect and remove illegal content, thanks to the use of advanced technologies and a team of experts. Last year, the organization processed more than 390,000 reports of potentially illegal content, removing from the Internet more than 275,000 images and videos depicting child abuse from the Internet.
Talking about this collaboration, Chris Hughes, the IWF Hotline director, said: “It is fantastic that domain name registries such as PuntoGal can now gain access to powerful IWF tools through the sponsorship of the Public Interest Registry.
“The sponsorship allows two important IWF services, Domain Alerts and the Top-Level Domain Hopping List, to be deployed far more widely, at no additional cost to registries and registry service providers.
“PuntoGal’s increased access will help them thwart the activities of criminals intent on the sexual exploitation of children and disrupt the spread of child sexual abuse images and videos. Collaborations like these are vital for making the internet a safer space for all.”
On the otherhand, PuntoGal is increasing its collaborations with international entities that work on network security “making of PuntoGal a safest domain”, in the words of Darío Janeiro, its managing director. “By protecting the domain we are not only doing a job for the network, but also for the whole community”, added Janeiro, who stated that ”the domain’s policies are clear and public. Our team works every day to ensure that they are complied with, especially when they protect the groups that need it the most.”
Before the IWF, agreements were already signed and joint initiatives with the Global Cyber Alliance, the cyber.gal node or the Women4Cyber, among other entities. With these collaborations, PuntoGal seeks to maintain the .gal domain as one of the safest domains, becoming a reference of reliability and trust both from a technical and content point of view. “Cybersecurity and the protection of our users are central objectives of the domain. This agreement, together with other collaborations and initiatives we are working on, show PuntoGal’s commitment to a safer network”, concludes Janeiro.
