ICANN, the entity that manages the administration of the internet, celebrated its 25th anniversary on 30 September. PuntoGal will attend the next ICANN meeting in Hamburg at the end of the month.

16 October 2023 | ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) is a non-profit organisation of American origin that operates internationally.
It was created in response to the need to manage the administration of the internet and the names that comprise it.ICANN was founded on 30 September 1998, and was originally formed by 3 support organisations, which were the ASO (Address Supporting Organization), the PSO (Protocol Supporting Organization) and the DNSO (Domain Names Supporting Organization). In 2023, ICANN is celebrating its 25th anniversary, and as Tripti Sinha, Chair of the ICANN Board of Directors, said in a note issued for the event, “Over the past 25 years, ICANN has been an example of global collaboration, standing firmly for the principle of one world, one internet”.Each year more than 300 public international meetings are held in different parts of the world, lasting from 4 to 6 days. Members of ICANN’s international community are invited to these meetings.

The next general meeting will take place in Hamburg, Germany, and will be the 78th edition, considered a significant milestone for ICANN and an important opportunity for the organisation and its stakeholders to meet and discuss the future of the internet.

The meeting, which will take place from 21 to 26 October at the CCH-Congress Center Hamburg, will bring together participants from different sectors of the internet world, and PuntoGal will attend on behalf of the .GAL domain (as domain manager), and as part of the Internet governance groups of which it is a member, RySG and the GeoTLD Group. The entity will take the opportunity to meet with the most representative entities and try to find common working points.

The GeoTLD Group will also take advantage of the occasion to hold a meeting and update its agenda.

PuntoGal, as a representative entity of the Galician internet domain, and a representation of the board of directors by the vice-president of the entity, Camilo Regueiro and the secretary, Edita de Lorenzo, will also visit the Casa de Galicia in Hamburg, to present their project and talk about the situation of the domain and what it represents for the Galician community, not only in Galicia, but also abroad.
