A delegation from PuntoGal, the organization managing Galicia’s domain, met on Thursday with the Regional Minister of Public Administration and Finance, Miguel Corgos, and the Director of the Galician Agency for Technological Modernization (Amtega), Julián Cerviño Iglesia. The meeting, framed within the institutional celebrations for the 10th anniversary of .gal’s activation, allowed PuntoGal’s president, Manuel González, to highlight the “commitment” of individuals and organizations that support the domain, which he described as “a symbol of Galicia’s future, modernity, and self-esteem.” González also emphasized the sustained support provided by Galician public administrations “from the very beginning” of .gal’s journey, expressing gratitude to successive Xunta governments for their collaboration “both in the process of obtaining the domain and throughout the ten years since.”
In this vein, PuntoGal’s general director, Darío Janeiro, also present at the meeting alongside Javier Fraga, a member of the entity’s executive board, underlined the importance of the Xunta’s decree issued in May 2015. This decree mandated the adoption of .gal for institutional websites and corporate emails, describing it as “one of the landmark events in the history of the domain.” Janeiro also highlighted the registry manager’s work in areas like cybersecurity, in collaboration with Ciber.gal and Amtega, advancing initiatives “to make .gal one of the most secure domains.” He also referred to efforts in analyzing the ICT sector, including reports like the study on the presence of Galician in Google search results, among others.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to review PuntoGal’s achievements. As its president reminded attendees, PuntoGal is a non-profit organization that has achieved financial self-sufficiency over the past decade, thanks to more than 7,200 registered domains and a renewal rate exceeding 90%. The organization reinvests its profits into programs supporting Galician culture, language, and technology. Over the last decade, PuntoGal has collaborated with more than 110 institutions and organizations, ranging from the Royal Galician Academy and Galicia’s three universities to publishers, professional associations in IT and telecommunications, the Galician Youth Council, the Galician Journalists’ Association, the Galician Architects’ Association, the Galician Bar Council, the Mesa pola Normalización Lingüística, the Eixo Atlántico, and the Galician People’s Museum. González also highlighted PuntoGal’s initiatives in technology, culture, communication, language promotion, gender equality, recreation, and sports, as well as the value of using .gal as a business identifier.
During the meeting, the delegation from PuntoGal received congratulations from the Regional Minister of Public Administration, who reaffirmed the Xunta’s commitment to supporting the domain in the future.
