A Coruña, 15 April 2020.- Internet domains are series of  numbers or letters used instead an Internet Protocol address (IP address) on a computer. IP address is a series of numbers, which works as a physical address or a telephone number, as it distinguishes a computer on a network that is the Internet. The assigned names of an IP are unique and make possible the communication within the Internet network.

Memorizing the number is complicated, so that is the point where DNS or Domain Name System goes into, which is the one that makes possible to join those numbers to a given domain name, a series of letters.

Among the domains we have several levels, first level (Top-Level) are those at the end of the name preceded by a dot, in our case “.gal”. Second level will be the domain name, so we have “exemplo.gal” where “exemplo” will be the same of the second level domain (SLD). A domain can have till 128 levels, separated by dots.

On the creation of the a domain use rules three parts intervene. First part is the ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) which sets the rules of creation, deletion and edition of a first level domain. In the case of .gal, second part is PuntoGal,which manages “.gal”,  establishes the registration rules for domains with a “.gal” stated on the registration policy. And the third part are the registrars, organizations that signed a RAA with the ICANN to be acredited registrars, that register “exemplo.gal” establishes the rules under that domain name and could create other extensions as  “mail.exemplo.gal”.

Having a domain name does not mean to have a web, the domain allows us to reach the web so some services should be implemented, as hosting or mail, to have presence on the Internet, that will be recognized by your domain name: a functional and accessible web. Hosting is a service that offers the storage of the data and contents of ta we. The storage is made at servers that should be offered by some companies.

Registry has a series of rights and responsibilities. They have the right to access the registrar information: the registry, management, transfer, renewal and restore. As responsibilities we can find: giving accurate information of the registry, notify registrant about the contact data changes, answer questions in relation with the domain registry and renew the domain name annually.
